One of the three daughters of Kekrops, mythical king of Athens. She and her sister Herse disobeyed the goddess Athena and opened the box that she had entrusted to them. As soon as they saw the baby Erichthonios in the form of a snake (or wrapped with snakes) they were frightened and leaped from the Acropolis rock. Only their sister Pandrosos obeyed Athena and thus the goddess made her Erichthonios' nurturer. According to another version of the myth, Athena made the two sisters mad and after she pursued them, both fell from the Acropolis. Another myth mentions that Aglauros following a prophecy given by the Oracle at Delphi sacrificed herself falling off from the Acropolis walls, in order to save the city from a long-lasting siege.
